Your smart tv is throttling your gigabit line and no one notices
That blue Ethernet cable snaking from your router to the back of a Samsung QN90D feels like a victory lap—until you run a speed test and see the same 93 Mbps you got on Wi-Fi. The gigabit plan, the Cat-6a spool, the smug nod to “wired superiority”: all of it hits a 100 Mbps wall baked into the television’s cheap NIC. Every major brand—LG, Philips, TCL, Sony—plays the same accounting trick, capping the LAN port at Fast Ethernet to shave a few cents off the BOM.
The 100 mbps ceiling no retailer lists
Inside the slim chassis sits a Realtek 10/100 chipset soldered straight to the main board. It negotiates at a theoretical 100 Mbps, delivers around 90 Mbps after overhead, and tops out there regardless of whether your ISP feeds you 300, 600 or 1 000 Mbps. The Wi-Fi radio—usually a dual-band 2×2 MU-MIMO affair—often clocks in at 180-220 Mbps in clean environments, simply because it is not artificially throttled. The irony: unplug the cable and the episode of House of the Dragon may actually buffer faster.
Streaming services publish glossy 4K bit-rate tables—15 Mbps for Disney+, 25 Mbps for Netflix HDR, 40 Mbps for Apple TV+—so 90 Mbps sounds ample. Add three simultaneous viewers, a console download, and a cloud-gaming session, and congestion appears sooner than expected. The TV’s NIC becomes the narrowest straw in the pipe, not the cloud servers or the last-mile fibre.

When ethernet still wins
Wi-Fi is a lottery of neighbours’ routers, baby monitors, and microwave ovens. A cabled link, even at 100 Mbps, gives you consistent latency ±1 ms and zero jitter—vital for Nvidia GeForce Now or Xbox Cloud at 1080p60. If your living-room décor tolerates a cord and your viewing habits stop at a single 4K stream, keep the wire; just abandon the fantasy of “gigabit to the panel”.
Power users running Plex servers with 80 GB remux files have already moved playback to an Nvidia Shield or Apple TV 4K, boxes whose gigabit ports gladly swallow 200-300 Mbps bursts. The television is demoted to a dumb display, exactly the role its anaemic NIC deserves.
Bottom line: that Ethernet cable is a stability patch, not a speed upgrade. The only thing getting upgraded is your awareness—and the retailer’s margin on cables you thought you needed.
