Trump slams nato allies over iran conflict support

US President Donald Trump lashed out at NATO allies in a series of scathing tweets, accusing them of not providing sufficient support during the recent conflict with Iran.

In a string of all-caps posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that NATO 'wasn't there when we needed it' and 'won't be there if we need it again'. He also brought up his failed attempt to purchase Greenland from Denmark, stating 'that great piece of ice, poorly administered'. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with Trump at the White House to try and calm the president's anger over the alliance's refusal to help protect US ships in the Strait of Hormuz or allow the use of some of its bases for attacks on Iran during the war.

Rutte praised Trump and sided with him against European NATO members like Spain that openly opposed the US war efforts and refused to provide aid. However, he also defended the 'great majority of European nations' that provided logistical support, bases, and overflights, calling it 'generalized' support for NATO's goals of weakening Iran's nuclear and missile capabilities, even if most preferred to achieve this diplomatically.

Rutte compared the situation to North Korea, arguing that diplomacy could be too slow, and dodged questions about whether Trump might withdraw the US from NATO or pull troops from European bases. The IMF warned that increasing defense spending could worsen global deficits.

Trump's threat to leave NATO is unlikely, as a 2023 law makes it hard for a president to suspend or withdraw from the treaty without Senate approval, which is unlikely given bipartisan support for the alliance. However, Trump could still weaken NATO or make it more difficult for the US to work with the alliance in the future.
