Spanish defense startup arquimea lands pentagon satellite deal, eyes hypersonic tracking
While Silicon Valley chases the next consumer app, a 300-employee shop in Seville just locked a slice of the most sensitive orbit the Pentagon is building. Arquimea will build the skeletons for 18 low-Earth satellites that the U.S. plans to use to spot hypersonic weapons mid-flight, the company confirmed Thursday. The contract, funneled through Lanteris Space Systems, is part of the Space Development Agency’s Tranche 3 Tracking Layer, a $3 billion constellation meant to see missiles that today’s sensors can’t.

Arquimea’s role is narrow and vital: it will manufacture the carbon-fiber frame of each 300-series bus, the lattice that holds sensors, propulsion and comms together while the craft screams across the sky at 17,000 mph. The work will be done at the company’s plant outside Seville, a facility once used to build parts for the Airbus A400M. Now, instead of troop carriers, the same floor will churn out spacecraft designed to watch Chinese or Russian glide vehicles dip and weave through the atmosphere.
The deal size remains undisclosed, but people close to the program say the Spanish firm will deliver 18 chassis over 24 months, with options for 20 more if Congress funds an extension. At roughly €400,000 per frame, the contract could touch €15 million—small change next to the prime award L3Harris won for the full sensor package, yet outsized leverage for a company that booked €42 million in revenue last year.

Why a european vendor got past the buy-american wall
Congressional pressure to on-shore every bolt of defense hardware has never been higher, but the SDA carved out an exception: components that are “non-sensitive” and can be dual-sourced. Arquimea already ships 120 satellite frames a year for OneWeb and other commercial constellations; the Pentagon simply treated hypersonic tracking as another LEO production line. Translation: Washington wants speed and scale, and Madrid can deliver both without waiting for a new Alabama factory to come online.
Still, the geopolitical optics are delicate. Spain is a NATO ally, yet its government has resisted U.S. calls to send Patriot batteries to Ukraine, fearing Russian retaliation on Spanish soil. Giving a Spanish supplier access to missile-warning code raises eyebrows among export-control hawks, but SDA director Derek Tournear told Congress last month that “structure is not secrets—sensors are secrets,” a line that cleared the path for Arquimea.

What happens next
First hardware ships to Lanteris in Houston this December for integration. If vibration tests pass, the 18 satellites will ride a Falcon 9 no earlier than Q3 2026, joining 126 other Tranche 3 birds already under contract. Together they will form a meshed network that can cue interceptors within 30 seconds of launch, shaving minutes off current warning times.
For Arquimea, the win is proof that Europe’s smaller aerospace suppliers can still muscle into classified U.S. programs—provided they pick the right niche and deliver on time. For the Pentagon, it’s a bet that allied factories can scale faster than Congress can fund new American ones. Either way, the next time a hypersonic warhead arcs across the Pacific, its first snapshot may come from a camera bolted to a frame that left Andalusia only months earlier.
