Qualcomm’s push into Windows PCs with Snapdragon chips has been a long, frustrating wait. Two years after the initial announcement, we’re starting to see the first deployments – notably on the Asus ZenBook A16 – and the results are surprisingly…encouraging.
A second generation that actually delivers
The initial Snapdragon laptops faced a brutal uphill battle. The fundamental incompatibility with the dominant x86 architecture, reliant on emulation, consistently hampered gaming performance. Gamers, understandably, stuck with Nvidia and AMD. While titles like Forza Horizon 5 run surprisingly well – consistently hitting 40-50 FPS with maximum settings – pushing games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Monster Hunter Wilds to their highest resolutions exposed critical shortcomings. Frame rates plummeted to 10-15 FPS, rendering them unplayable without significant visual compromises. The Adreno GPU consistently maxed out at 100%, a clear bottleneck, while the Qualcomm CPU remained largely idle.

Casual gaming finds its sweet spot
Despite the high-end limitations, Qualcomm’s chips are undeniably viable for casual gamers and users prioritizing portability. Titles like Age of Mythology: Retold and Ori and the Will of the Wisps offer a smooth 50-60 FPS experience – a far cry from the stuttering often associated with early ARM-based gaming.

The bottom line: a step forward, not a revolution
Qualcomm’s commitment to the PC market is evident, and the second-generation Snapdragon chips represent a considerable leap forward in compatibility. But don’t expect them to dethrone Nvidia and AMD anytime soon. For serious gamers, the compromises remain too significant.
