Samsung's $400 keyboard turns the tab s11 ultra into a laptop—if your wallet survives

Samsung wants another $399.99 to finish the tablet you already bought. The Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra Pro Keyboard lands stateside this week, grafting a metal hinge, aluminum deck and hulking trackpad onto the $1,199 Android slate. Total damage: $1,600 before tax—MacBook Air territory for a machine still running mobile apps.

The math that hurts

Look past the brushed finish and the spec sheet reads like a ransom note. One third of the tablet’s price buys you three reprogrammable keys, a dedicated Dex button and a Galaxy AI hotkey that mostly opens Bixby in a trench coat. The trackpad is generous; the value proposition is not. At $400 you could snag a Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook and still have cash left for a decent backpack.

Samsung’s cheaper Book Cover Keyboard Slim exists—$210, no trackpad, plastic skeleton. It types, but forget spreadsheets or multi-monitor workflows. You’ll be reaching for a Bluetooth mouse like it’s 2010, or twirling an S Pen until your wrist files a complaint.

The competition that bundles

Lenovo doesn’t ask for a ransom. The Yoga Tab Plus ships at $770 with keyboard and pen in the same box. Dim screen? Sure. Slower chip? Absolutely. Yet for half the outlay you get a rig that opens Excel without begging for accessories. Samsung’s bean-counters must have missed that memo.

Bottom line: if you need true laptop muscle, buy a laptop. If you need Android, buy the tablet and stop there. The Pro Keyboard is a trophy tax for the few who refuse to admit they already paid enough.
