From gyms to groceries: the same code, different payload
The deal, announced at 4 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday, is the first commercial rollout of Niantic’s Visual Positioning System outside gaming. While telecom vendors sell centimetre-grade GPS as a premium add-on, Niantic bets on brute photographic familiarity: every Pokéstop has been imaged in dawn fog, noon glare and midnight rain. The neural net stitched from those frames now recognises façade corners, bike racks and graffiti tags better than most city cartographers.
Coco’s squat six-wheelers will stream 4K footage upwards; Niantic’s cloud matches it against the player-generated atlas in 42 milliseconds, spitting back coordinates accurate to ten centimetres even where satellites fear to tread—think neon canyons like Shibuya or the concrete dungeon beneath a Manhattan block. No lidar sweep, no municipal lidar licence, no pre-scan. “We trade curiosity for infrastructure,” John Hanke told Technology Review last week, admitting the pivot still feels surreal.

The data loop nobody opted into—yet no one can sue
Privacy hawks will note that the imagery was never sold, only repurposed; terms-of-service clauses dating back to Ingress in 2013 grant Niantic perpetual “research” rights. With Scopely now owning Pokémon Go as of March 2025, the liability chain is murkier, but class-action prospects look slim. Meanwhile, Coco’s own cameras feed fresh frames back into the map, thickening the model faster than regulators can draft memos.
Investors smell a two-front coup: last-mile logistics margins hover at 8 % at best, and renting satellite ephemeris from the usual aerospace trio costs startups roughly €0.07 per kilometre. Niantic’s price list, sources say, starts at €0.01 and falls with volume.
