Shyam Sankar, Palantir’s chief Technology officer, has a label for the still-unfolding Iran campaign: the first large-scale shooting war where artificial intelligence sits in the targeting loop every single day. Speaking at the Hill & Valley Forum in Washington on Monday, Sankar told Bloomberg the conflict will be remembered as the moment software, not just steel, determined battlefield outcomes.
Maven graduates from pilot to program of record
At the center of that shift is Palantir’s Maven Smart System, a cloud-native command platform that fuses drone feeds, satellite imagery and signals intel into a single targeting dashboard. The Pentagon quietly elevated Maven to a “program of record” last month, unlocking a predictable budget line the Army can now scale without fresh congressional earmarks. The move frees $52 million for 2,500 reconnaissance drones the service ordered in February, all slated to feed data straight into Maven nodes.
The designation matters. Until now, Maven lived on the innovation ledger—easy to fund, equally easy to cancel. Program-of-record status hard-codes it inside the five-year budget, making Palantir the de facto operating system for sensor-to-shooter workflows across every regional command.

Ai target selection under microscope
That rapid ascent has a price: scrutiny. Human-rights groups and a growing caucus on Capitol Hill warn that faster targeting can outrun legal review. The flap already cost Anthropic its cozy ties with the Defense Department; the Pentagon flagged the Claude model provider as a “supply-chain risk” earlier this month after the startup balked at loosening safety guardrails for military use. Palantir embeds Claude inside Maven’s natural-language interface, so the blacklisting could force a swap-out weeks after integration.
Anthropic has sued to overturn the decision; a federal hearing is set for Tuesday. Sankar, meanwhile, frames the tension as culture clash. “The public hears ‘selective strike’ and imagines a drone with a mind of its own,” he said. “What they don’t see is the 72-page bureaucratic packet that has to be signed before a weapon releases.”

Lucas drones and the 154-variant gamble
He wants more experiments, not fewer. Sankar urged the Pentagon to channel its World War II mind-set when Army Air Corps engineers fielded 154 fighter prototypes in four years. “Maybe ten mattered,” he noted, “but we only found the ten because we built the other 144.” His proposal: flood the theatre with low-cost Lucas drones—modular airframes priced under $50,000 each—so commanders can iterate software, sensors and swarm tactics in real combat conditions instead of PowerPoint slides.
It’s a direct shot at the AI establishment. While OpenAI, Anthropic and Google chase artificial general intelligence, Sankar argues the fixation diverts talent and compute from narrow, battlefield-ready models that can ship today. “AGI has become a pathology,” he said. “We’ve let the labs fill that vacuum with end-of-world mythology instead of mission tools.”
The numbers back his impatience. A single Reaper sortie costs $17,000 an hour; a Lucas swarm of six can blanket the same grid for less than the price of one Sidewinder missile. Multiply that across 18 planned Spanish-made Arquimea satellites—also feeding Maven—and the Army gets an anti-missile mesh that updates every 90 seconds instead of every six hours.
War as a live beta test offends ethicists. It also delights investors. Palantir shares have risen 34 percent since the Maven upgrade leaked in March, outpacing every other defense contractor in the S&P 500. The company now carries a market cap larger than Lockheed Martin’s fighter-jet division, a valuation premised on the idea that code, not carbon fiber, will own the next conflict.
Sankar left the audience with a parting image: a 19-year-old intelligence analyst in Qatar queking a target packet in 12 minutes instead of 12 hours, while a Lucas drone streams back confirmation before the smoke clears. “That’s not the future,” he said. “That’s last Tuesday.”
