Orange will switch off 3G in Zamora and Roquetas de Mar this month, the first domino in a nationwide shutdown that strands any handset older than an iPhone 5 on a 2G lifeline barely strong enough to complete a call.
The spectrum grab behind the farewell
By vacating 2100 MHz and the borrowed 900 MHz blocks, Orange re-farms 2×20 MHz of prime spectrum for 5G NR. The maths is brutal: every MHz retired from 3G adds roughly 1 Gbps of theoretical 5G capacity, cash the operator urgently needs to mask the flatlining ARPU that has dogged European carriers since 2018.
The company’s own data shows only 0.7 % of traffic still touches 3G nodes, yet that sliver sits on enough bandwidth to power 200 MHz of mid-band 5G in a market where spectrum auctions have hit €0.19 per MHz-pop. Translation: the scrap value of 3G outweighs the PR risk of annoying a few tens of thousands of hold-outs.

Why 2g survives while 3g dies
Ironically, 2G gets a stay of execution until 2030. The reason is machine-to-machine: Spanish utilities still run 7.3 million smart meters on GPRS modems whose replacement cycle ends only when the EU’s 2027 radio-switch-off mandate kicks in. 3G modems, by contrast, never gained traction in the IoT channel; their chipsets cost more and delivered less battery life. No lobby, no pity.
Orange’s phased timeline—five cities in 2024, nationwide sunset by 2027—mirrors Vodafone’s playbook from 2022, but two years later. The delay cost Orange an estimated €120 million in lost 5G efficiencies, according to Analysys Mason, a bill the operator now wants to recoup by upselling 4G feature phones at €39 apiece.

The human residue
Walk into any Orange shop in Zamora today and you will find a plastic tub labelled “reciclaje solidario”. Staff offer a €10 voucher for every 3G handset surrendered. Few takers. Pensioners cling to Nokia C2-01s because the buttons are large and the battery lasts a week. They will wake up one morning with signal bars but no data context, voice calls dropping to 9.6 kbps codec. The digital divide, once an abstraction, now has a postcode: 49001 and 04740.
Meanwhile, the 6G PowerPoint decks keep circulating. The same executives who can’t kill 3G fast enough already promise terabit speeds by 2029. If history is any guide, today’s 5G banners will fade into the same spectrum bin before the decade is out. The only constant is the invoice: it arrives every month, and it never gets smaller.
