Google wallet gets a flight tracker – now you can see your plane's status on your lock screen
Google’s Wallet app just got a surprisingly useful upgrade: real-time flight tracking. Forget manually checking flight status websites – your Android phone is now your personal aviation dashboard.
A quick glance at takeoff
Initially teased during Google I/O 2025, the ‘Live Update’ feature, previously slated for Google Maps and a handful of travel apps like Uber Eats and Waymo, has quietly landed in Wallet. Google officially confirmed the addition through release notes for Google Play Services v25.42, though a specific launch timeline remains elusive. It’s currently available on devices running Android 16 and the Android 17 beta – a slightly patchy rollout, to be sure.
Once you’ve added your boarding pass to Wallet, a persistent notification and progress bar will illuminate your lock screen, displaying the full flight status. We’re talking ETA, departure and arrival locations – all readily visible without needing to open a separate app. A quick tap on the progress bar redirects you directly to the ticket page, complete with a link to Google Flights.
More than just a flight tracker
This isn’t just a standalone feature; it’s designed to integrate seamlessly with Wallet’s existing capabilities. Remember that automated Gmail scan for upcoming flights? Apple’s playing catch-up
Interestingly, Apple Wallet already offers similar functionality. While Google Wallet’s Live Update is still trickling out, Apple’s counterpart provides Live Activity sharing, allowing you to track flights for others. However, Wallet’s broader functionality – including QR code access at the gate – arguably provides a more comprehensive experience. Essentially, Google’s move consolidates a vital travel tool directly within an app most users already use daily.
