Google messages introduces long-awaited trash bin for android chats

Google Messages has finally rolled out one of its most anticipated features for android: a trash bin to prevent accidental message loss. This major change in chat management introduces a safety net similar to other platforms, allowing deleted messages to linger for a grace period before permanent erasure. According to the app itself, chats sent to the bin stay there for 30 days before being wiped clean. Users can easily restore or manually delete them during that time. On android Go devices, this window is reduced to 7 days for storage optimization.

How the new feature works

The trash bin is accessible via the profile menu within the app, where it now appears alongside archived chats. From there, users can view all deleted conversations, restore them individually, or clear the trash with a single tap. A notable behavior is that if a conversation in the trash receives a new text, the system automatically creates a new thread in the main inbox, while the previous content remains stored in the trash until its final deletion.

This feature is part of the latest stable release of the app, which is now widely rolling out to android users.
