Google messages inches closer to samsung-level customization

Google Messages has long been a solid SMS app, but it has trailed behind Samsung Messages in terms of customization options. However, a recent beta build suggests that Google is finally readying a major overhaul.

New features on the horizon

Spotted strings point to the app gaining the ability to use custom backgrounds for individual chats, rather than just a single color scheme. This would allow users to truly personalize their messaging experience.

Furthermore, references to bubble color customization have been found, implying that users will soon be able to manually select the hues for their chat bubbles. The option to mix and match different elements could also be on the way, moving beyond preset themes.

A long-overdue update

While Google Messages currently offers limited customization, Samsung's offering provides a far more extensive range of options. This disparity has been a major sticking point for Samsung users, who have no choice but to make the switch to Google Messages once Samsung's app is phased out.

The timing of this update couldn't be more opportune, as Samsung Messages is set to lose functionality in July, with Google Messages slated to become the default SMS app on Samsung devices. By introducing these features, Google may be able to win over some of the loyal Samsung users who have been holding out.

Room for improvement

While the incoming customization options are a welcome addition, there are still areas where Google Messages falls short. Categorization, for instance, is a feature that Samsung Messages offers but Google Messages does not. Additionally, the presence of Gemini, Google's AI chat companion, remains a point of contention for some users who see it as unnecessary within the context of an SMS app.

Nevertheless, with Google's recent track record of adopting Samsung-exclusive features, it's likely that these gaps will be addressed in the future.
