Google Hikes Pixel 10a Prices Due to DRAM Shortage
A mid-range phone typically sees price cuts after eight months, but the Pixel 10a is bucking that trend with a surprising $100 price increase. This unusual move is driven by a global shortage of DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory), a critical component in smartphones.
Understanding the DRAM Impact
DRAM temporarily stores data while a device is on, and is erased when the device is turned off. It provides the processor (CPU, GPU, and NPU) with instant access to the data it needs. The price hikes are impacting Google's Pixel 10a significantly.
As a result, Google has increased the price of the 128GB Pixel 10a by $100 (20%) to $599, and the 256GB variant has risen $100 (16.7%) to $699.

Price Increases Across Regions
The price adjustments aren't limited to the US. In Canada, the 256GB Pixel 10a has jumped 25% from $679 Canadian Dollars to $849 Canadian Dollars. Europe has seen a €100 increase (20%), from €499 Euros to €599 Euros. The UK has also experienced a £100 rise (20%), from £499 Great British Pounds to £599 Great British Pounds.
The shortage stems from manufacturers like Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix shifting production capacity from DRAM to higher-margin AI chips, such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for AI accelerators and data centers. This shift has created a significant shortage of DRAM chips.

Stealth Price Increases and Rising Costs
Smartphone manufacturers are responding by implementing “stealth price increases.” They are reducing the amount of DRAM used in phones, eliminating 12GB and 16GB tiers and replacing them with 8GB. A 16GB LPDDR5X RAM die, which previously cost $30-$40, now costs manufacturers $145-$160. This has led to a rise in smartphone MSRPs, with devices that once cost $999 now costing $1,199 to $1,295.
Google isn't alone in this trend; Samsung recently increased the price of its Galaxy S26 flagship line by $100, with the 2TB Galaxy S26 Ultra seeing a $200 hike.
