Cédric Choffat’s crew in Lyon has spent three years refining that second option—an air-locked, tsunami-proof, bullet-resistant sarcophagus sized for two adults and two kids, priced between €20,000 and €30,000, and engineered to keep four people alive for 72 hours after every classic escape route has vanished.
The 10-second gamble that replaces a citywide evacuation
Traditional civil-defense doctrine assumes you can outrun the threat. LifePods invert the logic: instead of moving humans away from danger, the danger moves past while humans stay put. Ten seconds after the door seals, multi-point locks engage, over-pressure blocks smoke and chemical infiltration, and the internal CO₂ scrubber starts its silent countdown. No one is coming to open it from the outside; the capsule is its own sovereign territory until rescue teams dig through the debris or floodwaters recede.
Choffat’s team tested the shell against 60-ton building slabs, 600 °C fireballs, and 7-meter-per-second water flow. Momentum sells three SKUs, each distinguished less by shape than by ballast and armor. B-01 is the urban model: extra Kevlar layer, 30-minute fire rating, and a silenced ventilation intake to keep gunpowder residue outside. W-01 trades Kevlar for double-hull buoyancy cells and a keel fin so it won’t tumble in a tsunami surge. Q-01, the seismic variant, skips flotation altogether and adds crush-zone crumple panels that absorb energy like automotive crash boxes.
Inside, every model carries the same minimalist survival kit: four-point harnesses mounted on energy-absorbing slides, a lithium-iron battery good for 80 hours of LED lighting and comms, a hand-crank fallback, and a patented lithium hydroxide curtain that scrubs CO₂ without the dust hazard that killed Apollo 1 test crews. Water bladders hold six liters per person; food is restricted to 1,200 kcal/day of compressed nutrient bars—enough to keep organs ticking, not enough to feel full.

The price tag reveals the real market
At €25,000 median, a LifePod costs more than a mid-range hatchback and slightly less than a seaside grave. Early buyers are not survivalist hobbyists; they are municipal governments in quake-prone Italian towns, luxury condo boards in Miami, and one Swiss private bank that ordered six W-01 units for its underground parking vault. Choffat shrugs at the moral debate—whether selling panic rooms normalizes the idea that public safety is now a private purchase. “We don’t make disasters,” he says. “We just invoice the gap between early warning and actual response.” The company’s order book grew 300% after the Turkey-Syria earthquake; delivery lead time is now 14 weeks and climbing.
