Training for the unknowable
Starting in 2022 the crew lived inside a plywood mock-up the size of a garden shed while instructors pumped in smoke, killed the lights and scripted 1,400 anomalies—among them a simultaneous comm blackout and ammonia leak that left them in masks for nine hours. They rehearsed the 40,000 km/h re-entry 37 times, enough for Koch to memorise the vibration sequence that precedes the 2,760 °C plasma wall. “We can’t train for every failure,” she admitted last month, “but we can train to stay curious while the alarms scream.”
The psychology team went smaller: who gets the top bunk, how long a toothbrush can stay wet, what happens when Hansen’s Canadian maple-cream cookies run out on day six. The answers are laminated inside Orion’s sidewall, next to the fire extinguisher no one wants to need.

The spanish engineer no one expected
While the crew rehearses, Carlos García-Galán sits in Houston’s mission control row F-3, authorised to call an abort if the European Service Module’s solar arrays wiggle more than 0.3 mm. The Spaniard, trained in Seville, is now NASA’s single point of failure for power on this flight; his console turns dark, the mission ends. “I still switch to Spanish when I’m nervous,” he told colleagues. NASA installed a second headset channel for translation—just in case.

What success looks like
If the heat shield’s new cork-composite skin chars evenly and the parachutes release in sequence, the four will splash down off San Diego on day ten, handing engineers 350 GB of telemetry that either green-lights Artemis III or sends designers back to the 3-D printers. A flawless return would also mean the United States regains the record for farthest human travel, snatching it back from the 1970 Apollo 13 crew—a 54-year-old benchmark that still defines the edge of human audacity.
Tomorrow’s launch window opens at 07:10 EST. Weather is 80 % go. The rocket is already shivering on Pad 39B, tanks filling with hydrogen that leaks at the molecular level no matter how many seals engineers swap. Somewhere inside the white bullet stacked above it, four people have closed their visors and started breathing canned air, trading 300 cubic feet of living space for a chance to redraw the map of where humans can survive. If they make it, the Moon becomes a gas station; if they don’t, Mars retreats another decade. Either way, the countdown is now measured in heartbeats.
