The system utilizes the Do-DT25 drone platform as its base, a decision that speaks to Airbus’s commitment to leveraging existing technology rather than reinventing the wheel. Currently, Bird of Prey can carry four Mark I air-to-air missiles—a figure slated to double to eight in the final iteration—each weighing a mere two kilograms but packing a fragmentation warhead. The Mark I missiles were developed in collaboration with Frankenbug Technologies, further accelerating the project's timeline.

The real challenge isn’t simply killing drones, but doing so precisely and affordably. Kamikaze drones can be deployed in swarms, overwhelming defenses with sheer numbers. Conventional missile systems, costing millions per intercept, are a prohibitively expensive response. Bird of Prey aims to bridge that gap, offering a low-cost alternative to maintain airspace security.

Mike Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, has emphasized that defending against drone attacks is “a tactical priority that could no longer wait.” The integrated combat management system allows Bird of Prey to communicate with ground-based defense systems, coordinating attacks and eliminating the possibility of ad-hoc responses. Tests conducted recently in northern Germany demonstrated its ability to engage multiple threats within a 1.5-kilometer radius.

But the system’s success hinges not just on its lethality, but on its accuracy. While Airbus has refrained from disclosing manufacturing costs, the promise of a significantly cheaper counter-drone solution is already generating considerable interest. The Korean demonstration of a football-playing robot, while seemingly frivolous, underscores the accelerating advancements in autonomous systems—a trend that will only intensify the need for sophisticated defenses like Bird of Prey.
