The uncanny valley just got a new landlord. International schools want multilingual classroom aides that never tire of repeating phonics. DroidUp puts the pilot batch at 200 units, shipping late 2026, each priced around ¥1.2 million—roughly the cost of a studio in Shinagawa. China’s edge is supply-chain gravity. DroidUp sources 83 % of components within a 200-kilometre radius of Shenzhen: torque sensors from Dongguan, laser-radar arrays spun in Huizhou, graphene heat spreaders incubated in a Zhejiang university lab funded by city grants. Iteration cycles compress to days, not quarters.

Cameras clicked. Somewhere inside the carbon skull, algorithms updated a million weights, learning that in this culture, a soft grip connotes respect. The moment felt tender, until you remembered the cloud logs storing every microsecond of human touch.

Exports start with Japan and Singapore, markets hungry for eldercare help and already comfortable with humanoids patrolling condominium lobbies. Europe lags; CE certification for “emotional interaction devices” does not yet exist. The U.S. is a question mark—ITAR regulators eyeing any Chinese tech capable of mapping the inside of a hospital corridor.

Come 2028, if you stroll through Shanghai’s Hongqiao station and a polite figure offers to carry your suitcase, check the neck before you thank her. The pulse you feel might be coolant, the smile a vector on a silicon mask. Moya is already learning the route to the platform, and the price of politeness is baked into the boarding pass we haven’t yet realised we’re all holding.
