Touch ID returns, embedded in the side button, because Face ID modules still refuse to fold.

September 2026 was the original circle on the calendar; Tim Long and Gurman now whisper Q1 2027, aligning with Apple’s new 20-month hardware cadence. The company needs the extra months to stockpile titanium hinge brackets currently being machined by Catcher Technology in Shenzhen and coated by Applied Materials in Santa Clara. One factory manager told The Wall Street Journal that each bracket requires 42 minutes of CNC time, triple the milling duration of a standard iPhone chassis.
Investors are already pricing in the risk: Apple’s R&D budget quietly crossed $30 billion last fiscal year, the highest ratio of revenue since the iPod era. Analysts at Morgan Stanley predict the foldable will cannibalize 12 % of Pro iPhone sales in its first year yet add $9 billion in new revenue by 2028, assuming Apple sells 15 million units at an average $1,600 blended price.
