Apple drags siri out of the drawer and into its own app to stop the ai also-ran label
Tim Cook’s team is done pretending Siri is fine in its current slot. Apple is testing a standalone Siri app—yes, an actual icon on the home screen—for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and plans to ship it before year-end, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The move ends a decade of burying the voice assistant inside Settings and long-press shortcuts, an admission that conversational AI has moved faster than Apple’s own OS hooks.
The new face looks like chatgpt, talks like chatgpt
Internally dubbed “Siri 2.0,” the rewrite swaps the circular waveform for a full-screen chat thread that keeps context across sessions. Sources familiar with the builds say the interface apes Perplexity and Gemini: bullet summaries, inline images, web cards, and a persistent text field that never forgets what you asked yesterday. A memory layer will pre-load suggested queries based on prior threads, a trick Apple’s current kernel extension model never allowed.
The timing is defensive. Motorola’s Moto AI and Honor’s Honor AI already consolidate on-device and cloud models inside a single launcher; Samsung’s Galaxy AI ships next month with live call translation baked into the dialer. Apple Intelligence, launched last fall, still scatters features—Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground—across first-party apps without a front door. Siri’s standalone binary is the front door, and Apple will wedge it into the dock by default.

Deep links into mail, notes and safari break apple’s own sandbox rules
Engineers are granting the new Siri entitlement-level access to every native app container, a clearance historically reserved for Spotlight indexing. That lets the assistant read drafts, pull slideshows from Notes, and surface attachments without a single “allow” prompt. The privacy story—on-device semantic index, differential privacy tags, opt-out toggles—will be retold in June at WWDC, but the technical reality is Apple is loosening the sandbox to match Google’s API reach.
Web answers get the same facelift. Instead of dumping a list of blue links, Siri will summarize the top five results, strip hero images and pipe them into the chat pane. The crawler runs on Applebot-Extended, the same spider feeding Applebot-Chat for Apple Business Connect, giving Cupertino its own content graph independent of Google’s search deal—worth an estimated $20 billion a year.
The risk is user apathy. Surveys from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners show only 18 % of U.S. iPhone owners invoke Siri weekly; Alexa sits at 42 %, Google Assistant at 55 %. A shiny new skin won’t erase the brand equity gap, but it buys Apple shelf space during the generative-AI land grab.
Expect a soft launch at WWDC 2025, June 8-12, followed by a developer beta that locks the app to Apple Silicon devices running 19.x. The final build ships this autumn, coinciding with iOS 19.2 and macOS 16.1. If the app icon survives the dog-food cycle, Siri will graduate from utility to platform—whether users ask for it or not.
