Amazon slams down on pirate iptv apps, warns users

Amazon has delivered a crushing blow to millions of devices using the Downloader app to illegally download and install software on modified Fire TV Sticks.

After being temporarily removed from the Appstore for violating third-party browser policies, Downloader has returned with a new 2.0.2 version. However, users are warned that during its absence, many installed fake versions of the app, which are highly dangerous and can lead to legal troubles and malware.

Downloader's popularity stems from its ability to download external apps not available in the Amazon Appstore. However, this also makes it a gateway for scams, fake apps, and copyright infringement risks affecting major companies like LaLiga, Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+, ESPN, and more.

The root of the issue lies in pirate IPTV services, where cybercriminals create illegal alternatives containing content from these services, sold at a lower price. At the end of last month, Amazon suspended Downloader entirely from the store for non-compliance, specifically for violating a policy prohibiting third-party apps from declaring themselves as system browsers.

Developer Elias Saba, of AFTVnews, has released the corrected 2.0.2 version, which has been accepted back into the Appstore. Nevertheless, he cautions that users should be vigilant, as the fake versions still circulating could request personal data and subscriptions, storing sensitive information for malicious use. The illegal consumption of content carries penalties of up to five years in prison.
