Every time you connect your laptop to airport, hotel, or coffee shop WiFi, you’re sharing your network with strangers you can’t control. Windows knows this, yet many devices still behave as if they’re at home. The difference between unprotected browsing or an extra layer of security boils down to a single setting: telling the system that a network is public and allowing its defenses to activate.
The hidden danger of open networks
Why isn’t hotel or airport WiFi like your own? An open, shared wireless network is a haven for cybercriminals. Anyone connected to the same access point can scan for devices, attempt to view shared resources, or probe for open ports on less-protected machines. Essentially, if your laptop presents itself as a trusted neighbor, boasting shared folders and active services, you’ve just handed them a significant advantage. Windows distinguishes between trusted and untrusted networks. In the former, it tends to facilitate device discovery and file or printer sharing.
However, the real problem lies in Windows 10 and 11. Multiple zero-day vulnerabilities are already being actively exploited in attacks. Instead of bolstering the firewall and obscuring your device, the system defaults to a more permissive configuration when you initially connect, prompting you to confirm ‘Do you want this PC to be detectable?’ – a question too often answered without critical thought.
A simple mistake can transform a hotel, coffee shop, or airport WiFi into a beacon, signaling to the system that your home network is the standard. This opens up a floodgate of vulnerabilities. Understanding this is paramount, as not all networks are created equal. If you’re not actively monitoring the profile Windows has assigned, you could unknowingly expose your laptop to threats across airports, trade shows, and cafes.

Windows profiles: public vs. private
Windows 10 and 11 associate each connection with a specific profile. Users see just two labels – ‘Public’ or ‘Private’ – but beneath lies a fundamental shift in how the system operates on each network. Marking a network as ‘Private’ assumes a controlled environment, like your home or a small office. Consequently, it enables device visibility, facilitates file and printer sharing, and activates default sharing services. It’s convenient for accessing your home NAS or office printer, but a disastrous decision in an unfamiliar network.
The ‘Public’ profile, conversely, is designed for everything else: bars, hotels, libraries, universities, co-working spaces – places where you have no idea who’s sharing the same router. In this mode, the system hides your device from the device list, disables file and printer sharing, and applies stricter firewall rules to block unsolicited connections.

The simple fix: always set to public
The good news is that changing a network’s profile in Windows is straightforward, even after you’ve made an initial mistake. The setting is slightly buried, but once located, it’s a nearly automatic action each time you connect to a new network. To access it, navigate to Settings> Network & Internet> Wi-Fi, then select the network name and look for ‘Network profile’ – choose ‘Public’. This immediate change reconfigures the firewall and dramatically reduces your exposure. It’s a deceptively simple tactic with a profound impact: reducing your attack surface, hindering others’ ability to identify your device, and limiting what they can do when you share a network with strangers.
