Facebook and Instagram suffered a widespread outage on Friday, leaving millions of users unable to access the social media platforms. The outage began around 9:13 AM EDT, with 21 initial complaints registered on Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions.

Complaints soar in 45 minutes
By 9:59 AM EDT, the number of complaints about Facebook ballooned to over 109,000, with 56% citing issues with the app itself. A significant chunk of users, 27%, struggled to log in to their accounts.
Instagram also experienced a rise in user complaints, jumping from 35 at 9:14 AM EDT to 8,675 by 9:59 AM EDT before settling at 7,532 by 10:44 AM EDT.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, acknowledged the outage, stating it was working to resolve the issue. Service was eventually restored, with Facebook coming back online at 11:00 AM EDT and Instagram at 12:30 PM EDT.
