Meanwhile, the rest of us, glued to glowing turn-by-turn instructions, exhibit the opposite trajectory. A 2020 McGill University meta-analysis of 11 studies found reduced activation in the same brain region among habitual GPS users, a drop that correlates with poorer performance on simple spatial puzzles. The pattern mirrors what happens when a limb is immobilized: disuse atrophy, only the cast is an iPhone.
It is not just about forgetting shortcuts. Researchers at University College London tracked 87 volunteers over two weeks. One group navigated a simulated city unaided; the other followed screen directions. MRI scans afterward showed the unaided group sprouted fresh connections between hippocampal subfields. The screen-led group lost them. In plain terms, outsourcing the route dissolved the internal map.

Apple and google won’t mention the cognitive price of convenience
The business model depends on keeping you inside the app. Every second you spend interpreting a paper map is a second not watching ads or generating location data. Apple’s glossy keynotes boast of “proactive suggestions” that anticipate where you’ll drive next; they never cite the 2019 German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases report linking heavy GPS use to earlier onset of mild cognitive impairment.
And the stakes rise with age. Spatial orientation is one of the first faculties to erode in pre-dementia stages. When the hippocampus is already shrinking naturally after 50, handing navigation to a server accelerates the slide. Neurologist Veronique Bohbot at McGill puts it bluntly: “Use it or lose it applies to neurons, not abs.”

What you can still do before the damage hardens
Turn off audio prompts. Zoom out and study the topology before you depart. Pick the scenic route once a week and force yourself to remember landmarks, not street names—your brain encodes visuals faster than text. If you must use GPS, set it to compass-only mode so you stay oriented north-south instead of passively rotating with the car icon.
The cost of ignoring the warning is already visible in emergency rooms: hikers who dial 911 because their phone died and they cannot retrace two miles of trail, city dwellers who panic when the subway kills signal. The brain that once could plot constellations now trembles without a 4G bar.
Navigation is the oldest human algorithm. Letting Silicon Valley run it for you is swapping a Swiss watch for a snap filter—fun until the battery dies. Keep the map folded in the glove box; your hippocampus will thank you when the satellites flicker out.
