In a breakthrough that could revolutionize electronics in extreme environments, researchers at the University of Southern California have developed a chip capable of operating at 900°C and storing data for over 180 hours.

The team's success came about by chance, as they were experimenting with a series of conditions that allow electronic circuits to function correctly despite the heat generated by their operation.

Unlike traditional electronics, which often degrade or even melt at high temperatures, this new chip utilizes a combination of memristors and graphene to achieve remarkable heat resistance.

Memristors, a type of passive electronic component, are capable of storing information in their resistive state, even when power is removed. Graphene, a single-atom thick layer of carbon, is known for its extraordinary strength and thermal conductivity.

By integrating these components, the USC researchers were able to create memristors that can operate reliably up to 700°C and retain data for more than 180 hours, with the potential to be reset millions of times.

This breakthrough has significant implications for the development of electronics capable of withstanding the harsh conditions found on planets like Venus, which reaches surface temperatures of around 465°C.
