Instead of simply deploying solar panels, the project harnessed their cooling effect to dramatically alter the microclimate. This reduction in soil temperature, coupled with minimized wind erosion, has created fertile ground for plant life – effectively ‘solar grazing’ – to flourish.
Huawei, a key technology partner, highlights this as a prime example of ‘ecological economic development,’ demonstrating how technology can be deployed to restore degraded ecosystems. The deployment of 5G base stations – facilitated by companies like China Mobile – further underscores this integrated approach, supporting both local economies and advanced technological applications.
The results are tangible. What was once a desolate, impoverished region is now generating a staggering 8.430 terawatts of power – the world’s largest solar farm – and, crucially, bolstering the income of residents. Annual per capita income in the area rose dramatically, from below $1,688 in 1998 to a figure exceeding $1,688 in 2019, driven by opportunities in renewable energy and sustainable livestock practices. Yehdor, a 48-year-old shepherd, recalls a desperate time when his livestock struggled to survive on meager forage. “In 1998, our cattle and sheep starved,” he says. “Now, thanks to the solar park, the land is green again.”
The impact extends beyond increased prosperity. Reduced evaporation and wind erosion – by a reported 30% – have dramatically improved the region’s water resources and overall environmental health.
