Spotify locks bit-perfect audio behind a windows paywall, and audiophiles are furious

Spotify’s engineers call it “minimal interference.” Users with multiple monitors call it “why did my movie go mute?”

Inside the codebase, the feature is a blunt instrument: WASAPI exclusive mode, the same API that Tidal and Amazon have offered for half a decade. The difference? Spotify waited until its AI-generated slush pile clogged Discover Weekly before giving serious listeners a life raft. The timing screams optics. A year after the long-promised lossless tier landed with a whimper—barely 1.7 Mbps, no discernible jump over 320 kbps Ogg—Exclusive Mode is the apology letter, but only if you run the right OS and keep the subscription meter ticking.

Macs are next, just not soon enough

Sources inside Stockholm’s audio team say macOS builds are compiling now, yet the CoreAudio path is “non-trivial.” Translation: Apple’s sandbox keeps poking holes in the lockout scheme. Expect a public beta “late summer,” which in Spotify roadmap language usually means right before the holiday churn.

Meanwhile, Linux and mobile users don’t even make the slide deck. The company’s data shows fewer than 3 % of Premium accounts ever touch a hi-fi toggle, so shareholder patience for a POSIX port is thinner than a 16-bit dither.

Still, for the small cohort who bought external DACs and curse the Windows mixer daily, today’s update lands like a long-delayed punchline. They finally get bit-perfect playback, but only if they agree to deafen themselves to everything else their computer is trying to say. Exclusive, indeed.
