Disney+ scoops espn deal, bolstering its sports lineup

Disney+ is doubling down on sports after securing a historic agreement with ESPN to bring premium content to 53 countries across Europe, Asia, and the Pacific, including Spain.

The deal sees the sports giant expand its global reach, adding 100 new markets worldwide. Subscribers in Spain will gain access to high-profile American leagues like the NBA and NHL from the 2026/27 season onwards, as well as college football and university basketball events.

ESPN's signature content, including the acclaimed documentary series '30 for 30' and cinematic sports films, will be available alongside existing offerings like the UEFA Women's Champions League.

Disney+ has exclusive rights to the UEFA Women's Champions League, with all 75 matches available at no extra cost to subscribers. This sets the platform apart from traditional football heavyweights like DAZN and Movistar Plus+.

While Disney+ has made significant strides in bolstering its sports portfolio, it still lags behind in securing top-flight football rights. In Spain, the top domestic league LaLiga is divided between Movistar Plus+ and DAZN, with both operators retaining rights until 2026/27 and extending their deal until 2031/32.
