Youtube premium gets a painful price hike – again

Google’s squeezing subscribers harder, and YouTube Premium is the latest victim. Subscribers are receiving email notifications about a significant price increase across all tiers, marking the third hike in four years.

A $4 jump that adds up

The individual plan is jumping from $13.99 to $15.99 monthly, while the family plan is taking a steeper hit, going from $22.99 to $26.99. YouTube Premium Lite, previously at $7.99, is now priced at $8.99, and YouTube Music Premium rises from $10.99 to $11.99. Frankly, it’s a relentless accumulation of cost bumps.

This timing couldn't be worse, considering Google is simultaneously testing 90-second unskippable ads on the TV app – essentially offering a degraded free experience while demanding more from paying users. It’s a calculated move, and a transparently unpleasant one.

The bottom line

The bottom line

Google claims these increases are necessary to “continue to improve Premium and support creators,” a justification that rings hollow when paired with these aggressive price hikes. Netflix has already doubled its rates twice in the past two years, setting a precedent for the streaming industry as a whole. Let's be clear: this isn't about innovation; it’s about squeezing every last dollar from a market increasingly fatigued by subscription fees. The annual individual plan, at $159.99, offers a marginal reprieve, but even that comes with the option of a six-month subscription pause.

For many, the choice is becoming brutally simple: cut the cord, deal with the ads, or accept the inevitable – a constant, agonizing calculation of which streaming service will be sacrificed next to maintain a semblance of budget. It’s a grim reality for anyone trying to manage their digital entertainment consumption.
